Recruitment Policy
Everything you need to know about applying, auditioning, and joining our musician network — written clearly, with no gaps.

1. Who we are
Sonic Artistes is a specialist facilitator connecting professional musicians with performance assignments aboard Carnival UK vessels — principally P&O Cruises and Cunard ships. We manage recruitment, scheduling, and compliance coordination: the pipeline that gets a musician from first conversation to confirmed assignment.
We work exclusively in the live music space within UK cruise entertainment. We don't cover theatrical production, DJ roles, or entertainment compères — only performing musicians across the bands, ensembles, and solo acts that make up the ships' live music programme.
We are a facilitator, not a traditional booking agent. There is no commission arrangement between you and Sonic Artistes — our fee is agreed separately with the cruise line.
2. How the relationship works
Your contract — if and when you're assigned — is with the cruise line, not with Sonic Artistes. We find the opportunity, manage the paperwork pipeline, and coordinate the placement. Once you're confirmed on a vessel, your employment relationship is directly with the client.
In practical terms, this means pay, onboard scheduling, cabin allocation, days off, and day-to-day duties are all managed ship-side. We won't have answers to those specifics in advance, and what we do know we'll share at the point of assignment.
We're an introduction and recruitment agency, not a personal management agency. We connect you with assignments and get you ready to join — we don't manage or represent your wider music career, and we don't take a cut of work you do elsewhere.

3. Your journey with us
The route to a confirmed assignment has four shared stages. How you enter the process — website application or direct contact — determines whether you have an initial conversation before or after your audition brief is issued. Both routes are equally valid.
Path A — Website application. You complete our online application form. If your profile looks like a fit, we may issue an audition brief directly, without a preliminary call. A conversation may follow at any point in the process, or may happen after your audition outcome.
Path B — Direct contact or referral. You reach out directly, respond to an open call, or are referred by someone in our network. We'll typically have an initial conversation before inviting you to audition, so both parties can ask questions first.
Shared stages, from audition onwards
- Audition — A structured audition appropriate to your role category. The format varies — see section 5 for full details. You'll always know the format before the session opens.
- Assessment and outcome — Your audition is assessed against our criteria. You'll receive a clear outcome — accepted, not progressed, or held for review — with brief feedback.
- Assignment — Once accepted, you are assigned to a contract and a crew profile is created with P&O Cruises or Cunard. This happens before compliance is fully cleared; your documentation is logged and tracked against this initial assignment.
- Compliance clearance — Your required documentation — medical certificate, maritime English test, travel documents, and crew registration forms — is submitted and tracked against your assignment. Compliance must be current before you join the vessel, and is maintained on an ongoing basis for subsequent contracts.
4. The initial conversation
Depending on how you enter the process, an initial conversation may happen before your audition, alongside it, or after your outcome. If you applied via our website, you may receive an audition brief before we've spoken — that's normal, and a call can be arranged at any point if you have questions.
When a conversation does take place, it's typically 20 to 30 minutes. This is not an assessment — nothing you say feeds into any evaluation. The call covers who we are, what the work looks like, your professional background, and your availability. It's also an opportunity for you to ask questions before or after committing to the audition. There's no obligation on either side.
Nothing is off the table in this conversation. Ask about pay, schedules, onboard life, or anything else that matters to you. We'd rather answer questions now than have surprises later.
5. The audition
The audition format depends on your role category. There are three formats, and we'll confirm which applies to you before the audition opens.
Format A — Timed async. Applies to reading musicians.
- How it works: Charts are released at the moment your session opens. You have a fixed window to download the material, perform it against the provided click track, and submit your recording.
- Duration: One hour from session open.
- Click track: Provided — your submission must be performed to it.
- Material: Set by Sonic Artistes, not disclosed in advance. Designed to test sight-reading at performance standard.
Format B — Async showreel. Applies to vocalists, the 710 Band, and self-contained acts.
- How it works: You submit a self-selected showreel demonstrating your range, style, and performance quality. Material is your choice.
- Duration: No fixed window — submitted at your convenience within a deadline we agree.
- Material: Self-selected. Choose material that best represents what you do and the styles you'll be covering.
- Stylistic brief: We'll share a brief context document so you know what stylistic range to demonstrate.
Format C — Live online. Applies to any role where a real-time assessment is required.
- How it works: A scheduled live session conducted online with our assessment panel. Performance takes place in real time.
- Duration: Typically 30 minutes, including a brief setup period.
- Material: Confirmed in advance. You'll know what to prepare.
- Technical: You're responsible for your audio and video quality. We'll confirm the platform and requirements when scheduling.
Format D — Live Online. Applies to any role where a real-time, in-person assessment is required.
- How it works: A scheduled live session conducted in-person with our assessment panel. Performance takes place at a physical location. - Duration: Typically 30 minutes, including a brief setup period for self-contained acts and preparation time for sight-reading auditions. - Material: Confirmed in advance. You'll know what to prepare. For more detail visit our [Live Auditions page](/live-auditions) for current details.
For timed async auditions, once the session opens, the clock starts. Make sure your recording setup is tested and ready before you begin. Technical failures during the window do not extend the session.
What we're listening for
Our assessment criteria are consistent across all auditions. This is what the panel will be evaluating:
- Technical proficiency — control and execution on your instrument or voice at performance standard. Assessed for all roles.
- Intonation — accuracy and consistency of pitch throughout. Assessed for all roles.
- Timing and rhythm — steadiness in the pocket and accurate placement against a click track or self-generated pulse. Assessed for all roles.
- Sight-reading accuracy — clean reading and accurate interpretation of written notation under timed conditions. Assessed for reading musicians.
- Stylistic awareness — accurate stylistic placement within the relevant genre and musical context. Assessed for all roles.
- Adherence to brief — following instructions exactly as set out, including format, material scope, and submission requirements. Assessed for all roles.
- Performance and presentation — musical engagement and projection for reading musicians; audience and camera presence for vocalists and solo acts. Assessed for all roles.
- Communication through the process — responsiveness, professionalism, and clarity in all contact with the team. Assessed for all roles.
The standard is high. We place musicians directly into a professional live music environment on ships where every performance is in front of a paying audience. We're looking for musicians who are genuinely ready for that context.
6. Assessment and outcomes
All auditions are assessed against the same criteria by a consistent panel. Scores are applied per criterion — there is no averaging across categories. A strong performance in one area does not compensate for a significant weakness in another.
You'll receive your outcome within a reasonable period of submission, along with brief qualitative feedback. There are three possible outcomes:
- Accepted — You've met the standard across all applicable criteria. You move to the compliance stage and, once cleared, join our approved musician pool.
- Held for review — Your audition shows promise but doesn't yet meet the threshold required for the current brief. We may revisit if the right opportunity arises, or invite a second audition after a defined period.
- Not progressed — Your audition hasn't met our requirements at this time. We'll provide brief feedback to explain where the gap was.
All recruitment decisions are final. There is no appeals process. If you're not progressed, we're happy to receive a fresh application after a reasonable period if circumstances change.
Joining the approved pool
Acceptance does not mean an immediate assignment. You join our approved musician pool, from which we draw as deployment opportunities align with your role type and availability. The time between acceptance and first assignment varies — it can be a few weeks or several months depending on demand at the time.
Being in the pool isn't a guarantee of work. There's no set amount, frequency, or continuity of assignments, and each one is offered separately — completing one contract doesn't entitle you to the next. Some musicians work with us back-to-back; others have longer gaps between contracts depending on demand and their availability.
We'll be in touch when something comes up. In the meantime, we ask that you keep us updated if your availability or circumstances change, and that your compliance documentation stays current.
7. Compliance requirements
Once you are assigned, a crew profile is created with Carnival UK and your compliance documentation is logged against that contract. You must be fully compliant before joining the vessel — not before being assigned. Compliance is tracked on an ongoing basis: certificates must remain current for every subsequent contract you take.
We'll guide you through what's required and flag anything outstanding. Some items take time to arrange, so starting early matters.
- ENG1 medical certificate — Medical fitness certificate issued by a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency approved doctor. Confirms you are fit to work at sea. Valid for two years for most applicants; one year if over 65. Must be current at the time of joining and throughout the assignment.
- Marlins English language test — A maritime English assessment required by Carnival UK for all crew. Tests reading comprehension and language proficiency at a level appropriate for shipboard communication and safety procedures. Completed online.
- Valid passport and right to work — A valid passport with sufficient validity for your assignment and any associated routes. Visa eligibility depends on the itineraries you're deployed on — we'll confirm what's required per assignment. It is your responsibility to hold the relevant travel documentation.
- Personal information form (PIF) — A Carnival UK crew registration form capturing your personal details, bank information, next of kin, and documentation references. Completed once and updated if your circumstances change.
If any certification lapses after you've joined the pool, your availability for assignment is suspended until it's renewed. It's your responsibility to track expiry dates. We'll remind you, but we can't be held responsible for a missed renewal.
8. On assignment
Once you join a vessel, your day-to-day relationship is with the ship's Entertainment department, not with us. The Music Director or Entertainment Manager onboard will manage your schedule, set lists, and performance responsibilities.
Every ship is different. Cabin arrangements, performance frequency, days off, and the wider onboard environment are determined locally and vary by vessel, season, and itinerary. We'll share everything we know at the point of assignment — but the ship operates independently and details can change.
- P&O Cruises — Contemporary British cruising. Live music across multiple venues, from large show lounges to informal pub and atrium settings. Wide repertoire range.
- Cunard — Premium transatlantic and global voyage brand. Formal and semi-formal entertainment settings. A high standard of musical presentation is expected at all times.
We remain your point of contact before departure and for any issues that can't be resolved ship-side. If something serious arises during an assignment, come to us — we'll engage with the cruise line on your behalf where appropriate.
9. Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be available full-time?
Cruise assignments are typically blocks of several weeks to several months. You don't need to be available year-round, but you do need to be able to commit to a full assignment once it's confirmed — partial contracts are not offered. During the time between assignments you remain in our pool and we'll contact you when the next suitable opportunity comes up.
Can I apply for a specific ship or route?
Not directly. Assignments are made based on role requirements, your profile, and mutual availability — not by musician preference for a particular vessel. We'll always give you relevant information about an assignment before you accept it, and you're never obligated to take a deployment that doesn't work for you.
What happens if I don't have my STCW or ENG1 yet?
You can progress through the audition without holding your compliance documentation — acceptance into the pool is based on your musical assessment. However, you won't be deployable until all requirements are met. If you pass your audition, we'll walk you through exactly what you need and help you understand timelines and costs.
Is pay competitive?
Pay is set by the cruise line, not by Sonic Artistes, and varies by role, vessel, and contract length. As your contract is directly with the cruise line, we won't have a pay figure to confirm until an assignment is offered. We'll always share the rate before you're asked to commit. The package also includes accommodation and meals onboard, which meaningfully offsets living costs during a contract.
Can I be in other bands or take other work between assignments?
Your work outside Carnival UK is entirely your own. There's no restriction on playing in other bands, taking land-based gigs, or working with other cruise lines — between assignments or alongside them — and many musicians in our pool keep an active land-based career going. The one exception is Carnival UK itself: when you accept an assignment you agree to exclusive terms for P&O Cruises and Cunard work, which means any further Carnival UK opportunities come through Sonic Artistes rather than directly or via another agency. The full terms are set out in the assignment agreement you sign before a contract. During a deployment, your day-to-day obligations are to the cruise line.
How long does the whole process take?
The audition and assessment stage can move quickly — sometimes within a week of initial contact. Compliance clearance is the variable: STCW courses must be booked and attended, ENG1 appointments require an MCA-approved doctor, and the Marlins test can be taken online at your own pace. Once all documentation is in place, first-assignment timelines depend on deployment demand at that time. Realistically, expect a minimum of six to eight weeks from application to assignment-ready, often longer.
What if I was unsuccessful previously?
A previous unsuccessful application doesn't close the door permanently. If you've worked on the areas highlighted in your feedback, we're open to receiving a fresh application after a reasonable period. Get in touch and we'll let you know whether now is the right time to reapply.
